When I was invited by the International Society for Professional Innovation Management (ISPIM) to run a Genius Journey Walkshop at the upcoming ISPIM Connects Bangkok Innovation Conference on March 9-11, 2026, I smiled. Not because I was looking forward to the extra effort required to organize this experience for the international delegates. But because I felt the time, place, and people were perfectly aligned.

Bangkok is not just where I live. It is where Thinkergy was born. It is where I had my Black Sheep awakening. It is where ideas stretch, collide, incubate — and occasionally ignite. The more I reflect on it, the clearer it becomes: Bangkok is not just livable. It is creatively catalytic. Let me explain.

1. A City Built on Paradox

Bangkok thrives on contrast. Golden temples beside modern glass towers. Spiritual rituals happening five meters from traffic that feels like controlled chaos. Street vendors crafting culinary legends next to Michelin-starred culinary precision. In the early morning, monks in their orange saffron robes calmly walking through your neighborhood barefoot to receive offerings (in exchange for blessings), while businesspeople in black suits hustle to work.

Likewise, creativity itself is paradoxical. You need effort and discipline — and surrender. Deep focus — and total detachment. Hundreds of ideas generated with a team in an innovation workshop — or one breakthrough that arrives “out of nowhere” while in solitude. Bangkok does not resolve contradictions. It allows them.

Creativity begins when the brain connects things that don’t normally go together. When opposites sit side by side long enough, new combinations emerge naturally. In Bangkok, contrast is not an exception — it’s the default setting. You don’t have to force yourself to “think outside the box.” The box is already dissolving.

2. Intensity — Without Burning Out

Bangkok hums. It moves fast. It sweats. It pulses. But what makes it powerful is not the energy alone. It’s the rhythm.

You can go from a deeply focused strategy session in a sleek corporate boardroom to sitting quietly in a temple courtyard within the same hour. You can encounter hundreds of people in a shopping mall or observe flying squirrels, exotic birds, and giant monitor lizards while running in a park.

Creative work requires oscillation: Dedicated preparation and deep immersion. Then release. Focused application. Then total relaxation. Work intensely on a wicked creative challenge — then step away and let the unconscious finish the job.

Bangkok naturally supports that cycle. You work. You walk. You run. You observe the flow of traffic. You float in a boat on the river or in a canal. You watch the sun sink into the skyline. And then —all of a sudden, “Wow!”— illumination.

The city doesn’t just fuel effort. It protects recovery. That harmonious rhythm is not a luxury. It is a creative advantage that makes it easier to get into flow.

3. A Playground for Flow

Flow happens when a challenge meets your level of skill in the right proportion. As Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi famously put it, “The best moments in our lives are not the passive, receptive, relaxing times… the best moments usually occur when a person’s body or mind is stretched to its limits in a voluntary effort to accomplish something difficult and worthwhile.”

Bangkok provides challenges daily. Cultural nuances. Language shifts. Improvisation. Micro-negotiations in daily life. Rapid adaptation. Sensory overload. You cannot operate here mechanically. You are alert. Engaged. Responsive. That stretch keeps your cognitive muscles toned.

Combined with the city’s natural rhythm of intensity and pause, it becomes easier to slip into flow states — those moments where time dissolves, work feels effortless, and you float freely, deeply immersed in the moment. Bangkok keeps you awake without exhausting you. So, let go and go with the city's flow to regularly experience flow states.

4. Emotional Warmth in a High-Energy Environment

Here is something underestimated in leadership conversations: The emotional temperature of a city matters. Thailand’s reputation as the “Land of Smiles” reflects a genuine social preference for warmth, politeness, and ease. Thai people are generally pleasant to be with. Warm-hearted. Non-aggressive. Positive. And this emotional softness creates something powerful: Psychological safety.

When you feel safe enough to explore, ideate, and create without constant judgment, your thinking expands. When you feel watched, criticized, or threatened, your thinking narrows.

Also known as the City of Angels, Bangkok is surprisingly tolerant and embraces those highly individualized creatives: Artists. Rebels. Entrepreneurs. Academics. Corporate leaders. Digital nomads. Spiritual explorers. You can be yourself here. And originality requires exactly that. Creative leaders don’t produce meaningful breakthrough work by shrinking. They produce it by standing comfortably in their difference. By insisting on themselves and on being original. Bangkok allows that.

5. Designed Simplicity = More Creative Output

In Bangkok, life flows easily, effortlessly, and enjoyably on most days. Delicious food is just around the corner. Fitness options are abundant. Healthcare is excellent. Daily services are affordable and reliable. International connectivity is seamless. In short, once you’ve learned how to maneuver the chaotic traffic flexibly, everyday life in Bangkok is comparatively frictionless. And less friction means more mental space.

Bangkok gives you something rare: Stable routines — and endless novelty. You can build a harmonious daily structure while also regularly stepping outside your comfort zone. That balance between groundedness and expansion is fuel for long-term creative performance.

6. Fresh Dots — and They even Come to You

Bangkok is a sensory ecosystem. Colors. Sounds. Textures. Cultural blends. Unexpected juxtapositions. Fresh dots everywhere to connect to a challenge you’re struggling with — and come up with a fresh, meaningful solution.

That’s already great in itself. But here is another, more strategic layer: Bangkok is a hub city. As a central gateway to Asia, we see a constant influx of people — founders, researchers, investors, creatives, technologists, old friends, and new collaborators. Instead of flying around the world to stay connected, often the world passes through here and reaches out to meet and exchange news and ideas. You hear about business shifts in Singapore. Startup labs in Jakarta. Design trends in Seoul. Tech experiments in Tokyo. Capital movements in Hong Kong. Conversations become cross-pollination.

And because Bangkok is a major flight hub, if you do need to travel — you can reach almost anywhere in Asia and the Middle East quickly and affordably within six flight-hours. You are globally connected — without being constantly in transit.

That combination is powerful. Creative breakthroughs often happen when you connect dots across domains. Bangkok provides the dots. And the connectors. As Steve Jobs noted: “Creativity is just about connecting things.”

7. Tolerance for Ambiguity

Bangkok does not operate on rigid linearity. Plans adapt. Timetables shift. Solutions evolve. Improvisation is normal. Initially, that can unsettle control-oriented minds. Over time, it trains creative resilience. Creative leadership demands comfort with ambiguity. Bangkok prototypes itself daily. Imperfectly. Resourcefully. Resiliently. Creatively. If you stay long enough, you begin to mirror that adaptive mindset.

8. The Black Sheep Awakening

For me, this city is also deeply personal. On Chinese New Year’s Day 2003 — the first day of the Year of the Black Sheep — I experienced a life-changing Eureka moment here. After months of internal questioning and soul-searching, I spent an afternoon relaxing by a swimming pool, reading, reflecting, doing nothing “productive.” As the sun set, something clicked. Dots connected.  Clarity arrived — suddenly, undoubtedly. “Eureka! I found it!”

From one moment to the next, I knew who I really was and what I needed to do with my life. As Joseph Campbell once said, “The privilege of a lifetime is being who you are.”

Thinkergy was conceived in that moment. Not in a boardroom. Not under pressure. But in rhythm. Focus — and release. Preparation — and incubation. Dedicated application — and total relaxation. Bangkok held the space for that breakthrough. Perhaps that is why it still feels like home more than two decades later.

9. A Natural Backdrop for Genius Journey Work

Over the years, Bangkok has become a living laboratory for Genius Journey trainings (short workshops, action-packed day trips, and multi-day voyages) and for my graduate-level university courses in Creative Leadership. Not because it is convenient. But because the city amplifies the right conditions. It invites curiosity. It tolerates individuality. It rewards courage. It supports rhythm. It provides fresh dots. It connects worlds. It provides the places and experiences to embody creative leadership and bring the 10 Stop-Start mindsets of geniuses to life.

For week-long deep-dive programs (Genius Journey Escapes), we might prefer to travel to more secluded destinations such as Angkor Wat, Borobudur, or Bhutan. But Bangkok remains a uniquely dynamic starting point — where ancient wisdom, modern ambition, and everyday improvisation intersect.

In short:

Bangkok challenges me intellectually. Energizes me emotionally. Connects me globally. Grounds me culturally. And stretches me creatively. It is not polished. It is alive. It is unapologetically authentic. And for a creative leader, aliveness and authenticity are everything. That is why I stay. And perhaps that is why so many creative journeys begin here.
